The Strawberry Begonia (Saxifraga stolonifera) is a delightful and versatile plant, perfect for brightening up any space. Known for its round, velvety green leaves with silver veining and a rich red underside, this compact plant stands at 15 cm tall and comes in a 12 cm diameter pot. Its trailing runners produce small "baby plants," making it an eye-catching choice for hanging baskets, shelves, or tabletops.
Despite its name, the Strawberry Begonia is neither a strawberry nor a begonia but gets its nickname from its strawberry-like runners and begonia-like foliage. Its easy care and unique charm make it a great addition for plant lovers of all levels.
Care Guide:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate low light but grows best with plenty of filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting it sit in standing water.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Place near a humidifier or mist occasionally to keep the leaves healthy and vibrant.
- Temperature: Ideal in temperatures between 18–28°C.
- Soil: Prefers a well-draining potting mix with good aeration. A mix designed for houseplants or one with peat and perlite works well.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer every 4–6 weeks.
- Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking neat. You can trim runners to control growth or propagate baby plants.
- Propagation: Easily propagated by placing the baby plants from runners into the soil while still attached to the mother plant or cutting and rooting them separately.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant outgrows its pot, using a container with good drainage.
