Philodendron Micans, also known as Velvet Leaf Philodendron, is a popular trailing houseplant with heart-shaped leaves that have a velvety texture. The leaves are typically green with a bronze hue, but can turn coppery red under certain lighting conditions, giving it a unique and attractive appearance.
Care instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate moderate to low light. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, but do not let the plant sit in standing water, as it can cause root rot. Allow for slight drying between waterings.
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity, so misting the leaves or placing a humidity tray nearby can be beneficial.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 20-30°C. Avoid cold drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.
- Soil: Well-draining potting mix with good aeration, such as a mix of peat moss, perlite, and/or orchid bark.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
- Propagation: Can be propagated through stem cuttings, rooting nodes, or by air layering.
- Pruning: Prune to control the plant's size and shape, and to remove any yellow or damaged leaves.
- Pests and Diseases: Micans is generally resistant to pests, but can occasionally face issues with mealybugs, scale, and spider mites. Keep an eye out for any signs of infestation and treat promptly.
