Ludisia discolor, also known as the Jewel Orchid, is a stunning orchid species native to Southeast Asia that features velvety green leaves with striking red or maroon veins. Unlike most orchids, which are prized for their showy blooms, the Ludisia discolor is prized for its foliage.

Care instructions for Ludisia discolor:

  • Light: Jewel Orchids prefer low to medium light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so place them in a spot that gets bright, filtered light, such as near a north-facing window.
  • Temperature: This orchid prefers temperatures between 15°C to 30°C, with high humidity levels. Place a tray of water near the plant to increase humidity, and avoid placing it near heating or cooling vents.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the roots. Allow excess water to drain out of the bottom of the pot to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
  • Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix with a slightly acidic pH (around 6.0 to 6.5). Repot every two to three years, or when the plant has outgrown its current pot.
  • Propagation: Jewel Orchids can be propagated by dividing the root ball when repotting. Ensure that each division has a few healthy stems and roots.
  • Pests and diseases: Keep an eye out for pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. These can be treated with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
