Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' is a unique and popular indoor plant that belongs to the fig family (Moraceae). It is characterized by its thick, bulbous trunk that resembles the shape of a ginseng root, and its glossy, dark green leaves. This plant is native to Southeast Asia and is commonly used for bonsai or as an ornamental tree in indoor spaces. It is commonly known as Chinese banyan, Chinese laurel fig, or Taiwan ficus.

Care instructions:

  • Light: Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but avoid placing it in harsh, intense sunlight as it can cause leaf burn. Place it near a window with filtered light or in a well-lit room.
  • Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures between 25-30°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but avoid exposing it to drafts or temperature extremes.
  • Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of the soil feels slightly dry. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, as it can lead to root rot. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant goes into dormancy.
  • Humidity: Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' prefers moderate to high humidity levels. You can mist the leaves regularly or place a tray of water near the plant to increase humidity. Avoid placing it in dry, arid environments.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, rich potting mix that retains some moisture but doesn't become waterlogged. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and/or orchid bark can work well.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half the recommended strength. Reduce fertilization during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
  • Potting: Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' is often sold in bonsai form and typically does not require frequent repotting. However, if you choose to repot, do so every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its current pot. Choose a well-draining pot with drainage holes.
  • Pruning: Prune as needed to maintain the desired shape and size. You can also trim back any long, leggy growth to encourage bushier growth. Avoid drastic pruning as Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' can bleed sap excessively.
  • Pests and Diseases: Watch out for common houseplant pests such as mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. Treat promptly if any signs of infestation are detected. Avoid over-watering and cold drafts, as they can lead to leaf drop and other issues.
  • Toxicity: Ficus microcarpa 'Ginseng' is toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and wash your hands after handling the plant.
