Drosera aliciae, also known as the South African sundew, is a carnivorous plant native to the Cape Province of South Africa. It is named for its sticky, tentacle-like leaves that trap and digest insects to supplement its nutrient intake.

To care for Drosera aliciae, follow these tips:

  • Provide the plant with bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. Indoors, a south-facing window is ideal.
  • Use a well-draining, acidic soil mix, such as a blend of peat moss and perlite or sand.
  • Water the plant with distilled, filtered water or rainwater, as tap water may contain minerals that can harm the plant. Keep the soil moist at all times, but avoid overwatering or allowing the plant to sit in standing water.
  • Maintain a high humidity level, ideally between 50-70%. You can achieve this by misting the plant regularly, placing a humidifier nearby, or placing the plant on a tray of wet pebbles.
  • Do not fertilize the plant, as it obtains its nutrients from the insects it catches.
  • Remove any dead leaves or spent traps to promote new growth and prevent fungal infections.
  • Drocera aliciae is sensitive to low temperatures and frost, so it should be kept in a warm location, ideally between 25-32°C.
  • In its natural habitat, Drocera aliciae is adapted to nutrient-poor soils and relies on its carnivorous diet for survival. However, in cultivation, it may benefit from occasional feedings of live or freeze-dried insects or fish food to supplement its diet.
