Begonia amphioxus is an exotic begonia species native to the rainforests of Borneo. It is known for its distinctive foliage, characterized by long, narrow leaves with maroon dots. The leaves are typically 10-20 cm long and 2-5 cm wide. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, typically white or green.

Care Instructions:

Light:

Begonia amphioxus prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Water:

Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Humidity:

Begonia amphioxus thrives in high humidity. Ideally, the humidity should be around 70%. If the air is dry, you can increase humidity by placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water or misting the leaves regularly.

Temperature:

Begonia amphioxus prefers warm temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68°F and 86°F).

Soil:

Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter.

Fertilizer:

Fertilize your Begonia amphioxus every two weeks during the growing season with a diluted solution of liquid fertilizer.

Pruning:

Pinch back the stems occasionally to encourage bushier growth.

Repotting:

Repot your Begonia amphioxus every year or two in a pot that is one size larger.

Propagation:

Begonia amphioxus can be propagated by stem cuttings or division.

Pests and Diseases:

Begonia amphioxus is susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, including aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and fungal diseases. Inspect your plant regularly for signs of pests or diseases.

Toxicity:

Begonia amphioxus is toxic to pets if ingested.

Additional Tips:

  • Begonia amphioxus is a terrarium plant and can be difficult to grow indoors without providing high humidity.
  • Begonia amphioxus is a slow-growing plant, so be patient and enjoy the process of watching it grow.
